How much water, roughly?
By Josh Elgram, WellPawed. Last updated .
A household figure for dogs, from food and water together. Not a dose. Cats are not given a quota.

A figure often quoted for healthy dogs is about 50 ml per kg per day from food and water together. It is not a dose and not a target to force.
Cats often drink less, especially on wet food. A fountain is an experiment. A sudden change in drinking or weeing is a vet call, not a shop call.

How it will decide
- 50 ml per kg per day is a commonly quoted starting figure for healthy dogs, including moisture in food.
- It is not a prescription and not a reason to restrict or force water.
- Cats are not given a millilitre target. A sudden change is a vet question.
