Winter paw care
By Josh Elgram, WellPawed. Last updated .
Salt, grit and cold UK pavements. Wipe paws, and do not expect balm or boots to do the walk for you.
UK winter walks pick up grit, de-icing salt and cold. Ice can sit between pads. The first tool is still your eyes and a towel by the door.
A simple order
- Keep the route shorter when the ground is salted or icy.
- Wipe or rinse paws when you come in, including between the pads.
- Check for cracks and balls of ice. A lame dog needs a vet, not a thicker balm.
- If the pads are intact and you know the ingredients, a balm is a reasonable after-step. We do not know our ingredients yet.
- Boots are optional, dog-only, and size-unconfirmed.
The winter paw tool puts your pet's details next to that list. Everyday checking, without the salt, is in everyday paw care. Hot weather is the opposite problem: hot pavements.
Both products sit in Paw Care.

FAQ
Does balm protect against road salt during the walk?
Do not count on it. Balm is an after-walk product for intact skin, and our ingredients are to be confirmed. Wiping salt off is the reliable step.
Should every dog wear boots in winter?
No. Some dogs benefit on gritted routes. Many will not tolerate boots. Forcing a panic is worse than a shorter walk.
